Why Cowbell’s New MDR Endorsement Is a Game-Changer for Cyber Insurance

by | Mar 27, 2025 | Cyber Risk, Innovation

Recent reports show the average global cost of a data breach has reached $4.88m, a 10% increase over last year and the highest total ever. Tech giants such as Microsoft say their clients now face 600 million attacks daily from cybercriminals and nation-state threat actors.

In response, Cowbell introduced its Managed Detection and Response (MDR) endorsement, intended to reward policyholders who are taking a proactive approach by making investments in fortifying their infrastructure and implementing Cowbell MDR to enhance their security posture.

This new endorsement may eliminate the $25k deductible for Cowbell Breach Fund, which covers incident response services should there be an incident. The endorsement is available to all policyholders that acquire an MDR service through our new Cowbell Resiliency Services (CRS) offering.

MDR provides 24/7 monitoring of a company’s systems, helping to detect and respond to cyber threats in real time. That means faster containment of incidents, reduced downtime, and ultimately, lower claim severity. It is provided through our partner SpearTip and is available to all cyber policyholders.

Why does this matter? Cowbell recognizes that organizations that prioritize vigilance and have a strong cyber resilience posture should be rewarded. As cyberattacks grow more sophisticated and frequent, businesses—especially small and mid-sized enterprises—need more than just financial protection after an attack. They need support that helps them prevent and mitigate losses in the first place and a partner that recognizes their commitment to doing so.

Cowbell’s MDR endorsement signals a shift in cyber insurance from reactive risk transfer to active risk management. It gives policyholders a powerful tool to strengthen their security posture while maintaining robust coverage, potentially lowering their overall costs by demonstrating responsible security management.

Ultimately, it’s not just insurance—it’s education, prevention, and long-term partnership.
