Q&A With Cowbell’s New CTO, Joshua Chan

by | Mar 8, 2022 | Culture

Joshua Chan joined Cowbell Cyber in March 2022. In this Q&A, Josh shares with us his motivation for joining Cowbell.

Q1: Tell us about the journey you have taken to get to where you are today.

JC: I have always been drawn to companies transforming markets and industries – mostly startups, but also large companies that were launching new platforms. I love highly dynamic environments that are full of new challenges, and every opportunity has been one of great personal growth alongside the company’s growth. In a previous life, Rajeev Gupta and I developed a new, async, high throughput platform that processed billions of transactions a day, and this was the beginning of a great relationship, which ultimately brought me to Cowbell.

Q2: What drew you to the cyber insurance field?

JC: Coming from a security company, I am aware of the risks to which companies and consumers are exposed, and cyber insurance is increasingly relevant at this scale. The massive growth potential drew me into this field.

Q3: What made you decide to join Cowbell?

JC: The number one attractor was the energy. I sensed a fervor and a zeal in everyone that I talked to. People spoke clearly about their domains and the industry. I knew Cowbell was a good company.

Q4: What are you most looking forward to in your new role as CTO?

JC: Simply put, I love building. I love when solutions come together and provide that “Aha!” moment, whether it is a technological solution, a better process, or slotting in the right people with the right skills. As CTO, I am looking forward to taking Cowbell’s innovative approach to cyber insurance to the next level of sophistication.

Q5: What issues are priorities for you?

JC: Scaling. Cowbell is expanding on all fronts: a broad distribution network that is rapidly digitizing, the continued growth of our risk pool, the refinement of our risk assessment models with more and more data, and the increased sophistication of our underwriting. My number one focus is ensuring we will continue to scale in our platform, our processes, and our innovation.

Q6: Describe your role as CTO. What are your key responsibilities?

JC: My key responsibilities lie in the technological roadmap – vetting our technology decisions, architecture and how we support our partners and customers. This includes ensuring our processes are sound and that we have the right people in the right positions. In the short term, this means understanding how we currently organize and communicate, gathering our documentation, understanding our architecture and determining where we need to focus to reach our company’s goals.

Q7: What impact do you envision having in your role? What are your goals?

JC: Everything starts with great relationships. My goal is to build great relationships into great teams and great solutions!

Q8: What is a fun fact about you personally?

JC: I have a wife, 2 daughters, 1 son, and one on the way, and all of us practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
